Canon EF 180mm F3.5 L Macro USM Review

General information

This is a prime lens manufactured by Canon and the lens was released 1996.
The lens belongs to the category telephoto prime lenses, a telephoto lens where you do not have the possibility to zoom in and out.

The lens has macro-capabilities and is able to reproduce things in their true size (1:1) which is good, it tends to be the rule for calling a lens a 'true' macro lens.

Product description from Canon

At launch 1996 Canon wrote this regarding Canon EF 180mm F3.5 L Macro USM :

"This telephoto macro lens is capable of close-ups up to 1X without any adapter. It is ideal for photographing insects and small animals, where a long working distance is desirable, as minimum focusing distance is 0.48m. Three UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass lens elements (2nd, 4th & 11th) correct secondary spectrum and ensure sharp definition at all subject distance. By employing floating construction, lens extension is reduced and f value fluctuation is minimized. A ring USM (Ultrasonic Motor) provides silent AF and full-time manual focusing. As the lens length does not change during focusing, accessories such as Macro Ring Light at the front end of the lens, can be easily operated. Maximum magnification can be increased either 1.4X or 2X by using Extender EF1.4X or EF2X."

Compatibility, autofocus and focal length

This lens is constructed to fit all models of Canon cameras, regardless of camera model or type of sensor.

The ability to use autofocus is available for all cameras.

The lens has a focal length of 180 mm. Depending on which camera the lens is used, the experienced and perceived focal length will be different. Please visit the list of compatible cameras below, it will provide the equivalent focal length you get on each camera.

Lens brightness and image stabilizer

The lens brightness and aperture value is f/3,5.

The lens is to considered fairly bright.  This will make it so much easier shooting in darker environments where you do not want or can use flash lighting, for example in churches or at different sports venues. Lenses with good aperture values and longer focal lengths, such as this lens, tend to be popular amongs sports and nature photographers.

The lens lacks image stabilization, which otherwise os good for avoiding the blur that can occur when using slow shutter speeds.

Filter and Lens Hood

The lens has a traditional filter thread on the front and its measuring 72 mm which also the filter you will use must have. If you use for example an UV filter can be a cheap insurance against scratches and dust.

If you buy this lens it will come with a lens hood, whose model name is "ET-78II".

Tripod Mount

This lens is equipped with a tripod mount, which makes use of a tripod easier and more stable.
